Weekend Round Up

A couple of things:
I purchased two photo books at the Strand this weekend. At last I acquired Robert Mapplethorpe's Polaroids. It's simply outstanding. My love for Mapplethorpe is odd, if you know me you know Mapplethorpe is generally not me. However it is a strong bond I have with the late Mr. Mapplethorpe. Most people only associate Mapplethorpe with controversy. And much of his softer work is overlooked. Accused of being a deviant and exploiter, everything else is routinely overlooked.
His Polaroids are exquisitely beautiful and often tender & humorous. To me the Polaroids best manifest what I see in Mapplethorpe.
I also bought a copy Steidl's Saul Leiter book. What color and composition! Such a must. Not just for those who are interested photography but also for New Yorkophiles. I might have to splurge on Steidl's Saul Leiter: Early Color book as well, because there are a few additional images that I like to have in my library. However if you only by one, get a book that also include some of his B&W work.
On Horses Think (one of my favorite blogs) you can read how Mr. Leiter inspired the look of Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road.
And talking about Horses Think, on the right side bar of the Horses Think blog, you can now find a list for calls for submission.
For example you can find a link there for Nymphoto's Call for Entries :)
