Kiss & Make Up

Just when I had it up to here, the city pulls me back in. My relationship with New York is like a good marriage I can't stay mad for long.
A couple of nights ago the husband and I attended our community board's SLA meeting.
These meetings are usually very long. And by 11: 30 PM we were famished. But where to eat this late at night?
Restaurateur Gabe Stulman was at the hearing to present his case. He will be taking over legendary Village Institution Fedora's.
Downtown is filled with bars and restaurants. So usually anyone wanting a full liquor license here gets intense push-back.
As expected, residents living next to Fedora's expressed their valid concerns. However -and to me this was an unprecedented experience- there were also about 15 neighborhood residents testifying on behalf of Gabe Stulman as an operator. They spoke so warmly, fondly and passionately about Gabe's current restaurant Joseph Leonard, that we decided to try it that night. It was a lovely experience. The food was good and provided excellent options for vegetarians. The setting is intimate with much attention to detail. Our service was outstanding. Next to us set two men also discussing liquor licenses and community boards. And before long our conversations merged. Gabe Stulman came to eat at his restaurant a bit later. And we witnessed how beloved he is by his patrons (many who are also neighbors) and how attentive he is in return.
This was a good night. And I fell asleep way past my usual bedtime smitten once again with New York. What a great place to live.
