Summer about Town

I love the city when it is like it was Saturday: hot and steamy and with monsoon-like showers. Perfect weather to do some gallery hoping and to grab some tea with friends and/or family.
So here are some things to see:
The latest Walton Ford Exhibit is still up at Paul Kasmin Gallery in Chelsea, NY (through July 3rd, 2008) - around the corner from the Paul Fusco show at Danzinger Projects.
And there is beautiful photography (haunting portraiture by Julia Margaret Cameron , a Ville D'Avray landscape by Eugene Atget - that I love for sentimental reasons- and much more) to be seen at the Met through September 2008 in "Framing a Century".
The Louise Bourgeois retrospective has opened at the Guggenheim and through July 9th, 2008 the Film Forum will continue to show "Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, The Mistress and The Tangerine".
Also on view until September is "Arctic Hysteria: New Art from Finland" at PS1 in Queens.

And Tim Walker

And if you are in London this summer, I recommend the Design Museum and the Tim Walker show - Mr. Walker who I mentioned before, is one of my favorites.
James Danzinger has a nice post about the show titled Anglomania.

White Horse

White Horse © Tema Stauffer

I mentioned before how much I enjoy the blog of artist Tema Stauffer. I loved the story and image of her June 8, 2008 entry titled "Smiley". It's what life is all about. And I am so happy Tema is recording not only these images but also the stories that accompany them.
And I am (predictably) a little obsessed with the photograph above and the relating blog entry titled "White Horse" -- also to be found on Tema's blog: www.palmaire.blogspot.com.
The "White Horse" image will be included in a group show at Randall Scott Gallery in D.C. this July, along with some other outstanding art by Tema and others.

Mappelthorpe & Polaroids

When I was in art school I had a dream that I found a suitcase under my bed with all of Robert Mapplethorpe's negatives. I am not sure of the meaning of the dream (Mapplethorpe is not an obvious choice for me), but all Freudian interpretations aside, I like to think it just had to do with owning one's creativity.
Not included in that suitcase were his Polaroids, but they will be exhibited at The Whitney through September 7, 2008.
Karen Rosenberg wrote an article about the show titled "Spontaneity Was the Medium and the Message" that is published in the New York Times today.

Alexander Gorlizki @ Daniel Weinberg

Yesterday was the reception for Alexander Gorlizki's solo show "Strange You Can Believe In" at Daniel Weinberg Gallery in Los Angeles. The exhibit will run through April 19th, 2008. As in his collaboration with Riyaz Uddin, Alexander's solo work is influenced by Surrealism - but in his personal work he explores it in a more abstract way. My two favorites of this exhibit are a color study reminiscent of the work of Robert Delaunay and color & pattern study titled " Close and Personal".

New Work By Ryan McLennan

Today I heard from one of my favorite contemporary painters, Ryan McLennan, whose new work you can see & purchase at BLK/RKT Gallery.
I can never get enough of Ryan's work and I love the new elements that he has recently introduced. His voice is only growing stronger and more expressive.
Ryan also has a show opening in three weeks at Kinsey/Des Forges in L.A. I will remind you of this as we get closer of the date :)

Meanwhile enjoy these works of Ryan's:

Massimo Vitali @ Bonni Benrubi

Through March 29, 2008 the work of Massimo Vitali will be exhibited at Bonni Berubi Gallery in New York. I love Mr. Vitali's beach scenes, which are as complex as any of Andreas Gurksy's observations, but with a gentler color palette.
